The Story Lab and Fuji The Spin

The Spin is the first entertainment format to be launched by the partnership between Japan’s Fuji TV and global production and distribution studio, The Story Lab (Singapore). It is a hilarious game show targeting all audiences first launched in Japan in March 2021 with 23% share.

Global production and distribution studio, The Story Lab and Fuji Television Network Inc. announced details of their new entertainment format, The Spin, the first title to be launched by their recently announced global strategic co-development alliance. It shows an exciting twist on the studio physical game show: it is a simple, yet hugely entertaining format. Jam-packed with hilarious challenges, high energy dizzy game play and non-stop surprises.

A team comprised of five players must step up to The Spin, the huge spinning machine, competing individually in two-part challenges over a series of five rounds to collaboratively build and take home their ultimate prize pot. But there’s a twist…. In fact, there are several…. in every game!… as the teams never know what’s coming next.

It has been jointly developed by the two companies, working alongside top UK producer and long-term Story Lab partner, Rumpus Media. The adaptation and international roll out will be managed by The Story Lab, with Rumpus Media retaining the production rights for the UK. This partnership is the latest example of Singapore-based company leveraging its global network and relationships to serve the ever-growing market demand for exciting and distinctive Asian-inspired unscripted content.

Fotini Paraskakis, Global MD Content, The Story Lab: ‘It is a fantastic example of how we can work collaboratively to create fresh, scalable and highly entertaining game show formats that really do combine global appeal and Japanese creative innovation. We are really looking forward to further collaborations from this partnership with Fuji TV’.

Ryuji Komiya, Head of Format/Producer, Global Business, Fuji TV, added: ‘Joining forces with The Story Lab has been a great opportunity for us to build on the success of our formats around the world. We are really excited about launching “The Spin” this Mipcom. The development of this hilarious studio physical game show format highlights how The Story Lab’s global expertise and Fuji TV’s creative perspective have come together to develop strong, in demand IP that is truly unique’.

Iain Wimbush, Joint Managing Director, Rumpus Media, concludes: ‘We are absolutely thrilled to be able to be a part of this project.  “The Spin” is a ridiculously fun studio game show, with great visuals and simple structure that appeals to all audiences worldwide, it truly has potential to travel fast. We are so happy to see this go to launch’.

The partnership with Fuji TV follows The Story Lab’s launch and roll out of numerous international formats in 2020, including gameshow-meets-talent contest Nine Windows, developed in partnership with Nippon TV, now optioned in five territories and successful roll out of remotely filmed cooking show All Together at The Table, now also in five territories.

Fuji TV’s international format hits include Iron Chef, which has been locally adapted in eight countries and Hole in The Wall, which has been sold to over 50 territories. The companies first announced plans to enter a co-development partnership in February 2021.  The partnership is focused on creating original entertainment formats that are scalable and returnable. International distribution of all titles launched by the partnership to be managed by The Story Lab.
